ok, i am looking at a blazer that is 5 speed and i am planning on swapping the motor out for a 5.3 later anyways and was wondering what would have to be done to swap it to automatic with a factory center shifter too.

i agree with xblazer....why would you wanna swap in an automatic??? id give anything to have my blazer a 5-speed. but if u do it you may need a new computer programmed for an automatic transmission. but im not 100% on that. honestly id stick with the manual

Don't rag on him for wanting an automatic. Some people like automatics...I do. I don't like driving stick through the city...pain in the ass if you ask me. I prefer automatic myself.

Well now... More to the point of answering the question.

It really depends on what year of vehicle you have. The newer (96+) s-series vehicles have the programming in the PCM to control the electronics of the transmission. Since you are starting out with a 5spd, you would have to have your PCM flashed to be able to control the transmission as well as the wiring for all of the sensors and such.

Now with the engine swap you are considering, you'll already have to deal with the PCM aspect, so that would be the time to do the swap. If you get both the engine and automatic trans out of the same vehicle, grab the enginebay wiring harness and that should include the wiring for both the engine and transmission.

Now along with others here, I'd rather have a manual. But that is just my preference and has no bearing on this thread at all.

I have to agree with 88s10blazer. I hate to go through a drive-thru, have a burger in one hand, and try to shift and steer at the same time with the other hand. Then the cell phone rings. it's just too mumbly jumbly. That, of course, is why I have an auto in my blazer.

5 speeds are where its at, and man you shouldnt be trying to drive with a burger in one hand anyway so that shouldnt be an issue, lol. Drive thrus are the devil anyway. But post the details of this blazer you are looking at and I am always up for a trade, I would love to have a 5 speed.

Yeah, what's with trying to drive with a burger in your hand?  LMAO!

Sticks rock automatics any day!  I'd give anything to get rid of the auto in my Blazer for a stick!  My last three cars were manual transmissions ('91 Cavalier, '97 Grand Am GT, and '98 Nissan Maxima), and I miss 'em dearly.  I love my Blazer too, but the transmission is the one pet peeve I have about it.

In fact, I'd love to give GM a piece of my mind for coming up with the goofy idea of only allowing sticks as an option for two-door versions of the Blazers (when they offered 'em).  You can't get one at all in the new Trailblazer.  What's up with that?!?

I even emailed GM's corporate office about it, and their response was that buyers of these trucks want automatics more than sticks.  I have a hard time believing this, especially since this thread has received so much response saying otherwise.  I propose that we send a copy of this thread directly to GM.  Believe it or not, a real person actually responds to it.

I think our concerns carry more clout if they come from forums just like this.  In fact, I will look for GM's response in my email archive and post it later on this thread.

AND - a true manual tranny driver NEVER gets sick of it!  I'll take a number and wait in line for that manual transmission you wanna get rid of!

Me personally I love the control of stick and the thrill, but I also love the automatic trans offroading and that is exactly why I am getting a hurst rachet shifter.
