So the longer the cable the higher Gauge you should use? I didnt know that.

longer lengths of wire equal more resistance. To counter act the resistance, a larger wire is used.

always good to get bigger cable if you plan on upgrading in the future.  get as big as you can afford.

so for my amp do i go by the total watts or the rms

you dont want to use the RMS when calculating for wire length, you want to use the total maximum.
