I'm an automotive technician at a Chevy dealer, but they just merged 4 dealerships, so now I'm seeing some Nissan, Buick, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles also.  It's O.K. I would probably major in something else if I could do it again, but it's all I knew at the time and there was a baby on the way so....no regrets!

I think your job is awesome and a job that can make you very valuable in the working environment. Let alone, an automotive technician is a great trait to have.

I used to be a Mechanic both Civilian and Military, If I could do it again I would have waited for an opening at the MP school instead of taking a mechanic job.  Its good to know but anyone with a mechnical mindset can do it, its not hard to learn. Its a job, it paid the bills but I love money too much to not make alot of it.

And yes, always working on other peoples junk instead of my own kinda bored me out of the hobby, I just stick around for the technical data thats to be had on these forums.

LastCoupe, are they making you get certified for the new makes ?

Thanks man.  Yeah, I guess one thing you can say about my profession is that they won't be sending my job overseas!  I am good at it too, I have very few repeat concerns ("come-backs) and in only 8 years, I am the highest paid flat rate tech in the shop.  I'm not tryin' to brag, just trying to ensure I stay interested and not board to go looking for something else, I like to keep my feet planted.  At least until my kids are grown.

No, not as of yet anyway.

I beg to differ, but In the 8 years I've been at this dealer there have been well over 50 techs in-and-out of there and MOST of them were NOT ANY GOOD at it at all.  I agree that it's not hard to replace parts, but a parts changer does not a technician make.

Yes it's a job......It almost pays the bills (LOL)...........and believe me I've looked and I can't find any other job that I can make 55,000 a year without going back to college.

Sorry for posting 2-in-a-row KYLE

I live to play. To pay for that I have a few jobs.
Fulltime- Statistical Analyst - ISO Management Rep for a Direct Marketing company. We mail over 60 million pieces of mail per year. Every piece is personalized and directed specifically to the recipient. None of it is junk mail, so they tell us.
Current Part time gigs- Plow snow & DJ weddings.

I gotta agree with LastCoupe. Almost anyone can replace parts, it takes a technician to diagnose and repair vehicles.

Sounds like thier are some very talented poeple on this site.

Lastcoupe,   thats ALOT of "techs" we didnt go thru that many in the 3 years I was at lexus and the 3 years in the army. A close family friend has been a GM master tech for the past 27 years at the same dealership he started as a porter in the late 70's, he is damn good at what he does.
