Well to begin with you can do the swap, but you will have to get a transmission from the 4.3 donor vehicle or elsewhere. The 2.8 is a 60* v6 the 4.3 is a 90* v6 so mating the 4.3 to your existing tranny will be a problem since the bolt patterns are different. If that is a problem then you could try a 3.8L buick/olds/pontiac v6 since it is a 90* v6 with a 2.8L(60*) transmission bell housing bolt pattern. Then you could even try the supercharged version with 240+HP...but rebuild the tranny for that swap...

You can get a manifold from edelbrock to use a carb on a 4.3L check out the Hot Rod Magazine build up of a 4.3L with 300HP

I have the same questions about my '85 S10...It's a dog..more HP for the stock motor or a  4.3 swap..I'd rather have a V8 how hard is it to install one..is it legal smog-wise??

You can swap in a 3.4L V6. Gm sells them as a crate engine, or pick one up from your local salvage yard. Donors would be Camaroes, Firesbirds. The 3.4L V6 will bolt up to your curent tranny, and is the recommended replacement engine from GM. It is also about 20% bigger then the 2putt8.

If you go with a 4.3L V6 it will be as much work as installing a SBC V8. Donors are everywhere. In '85-'86 GM put a carb'd 4.3L V6 into fullsize trucks. If you elect to go that route, get one from a '86. It will have a one piece rear output seal. With the 2 piece rear output seal you will have to fabricate your own oil pan. No one makes an oil pan that fits a 2 piece rear main seal 4.3L v6 and a S10.

If your serious about doing a 4.3L or V8 swap, buy the book by JTR. Do a web search for JTR V8 swap and it will be one of hte top few choices. Books like $20 but it covers everything you need to do the swap.

Yeah with that year i would opt for a v-8 motor and tranny swap..

Or a 3.4L out of a Camaro and then put on the upgraded fuel injection system from a newer like 1999 and up Malibu/GA/Alero/Century(Buick)

It is cheaper than sticking money into a motor that is not designed to be hot rodded, since the ASA switched to crate LS1 motors the parts for high HP GM V6's is getting very low and expensive to find...

Most salvage yards will sell the puter, wiring, and engine as one package deal.
You can put your carb on it, including your intake. The 3.4L V6 is basically a punched out 2putt8. All of your stuff should bolt up to it. I am not sure if you will need to upgrade the jets on your carb. I know on the fuel injected conversion (2putt8 FI to 3.4 FI) you need to use 4.3L fuel injectors and can then use the stock puter.
