K.  my speedometer makes all kinds of racket and sometimes starts jumping around, so eh it's sketch.  and it drives me up a wall high enough to reach the moon.  Looking for a good/quiet one.  Also, I have the big fuel gauge where a tach should go, so I'm looking for a V6 tach and the small fuel gauge that goes where the "FASTEN BELTS" light currently is.

thanks guys.

edit//: it's this dash: http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r60/mr740ti/blazer/100_0361.jpg

edit2:// preferrably the speedo would be from an '85 4x4 S10, so I'll have an accurate speed reading with 235/75R15s.  205/75R15s, and only being able to get car tires for that size, for the serious lose.  Going 80 while thinking I'm doing 70 also for the serious lose.

Check your speedo cable.  I have seen more cables cause noise, and jumpy needles than faulty speedos.  Plus they are pretty cheap parts also.  Korey.

I wasn't aware that V6's and 4 bangers got different tachs... I just know that the 2.8 didn't get a shift light...

It sounds like gears grinding inside the speedometer itself - the noise is definately coming from that spot in the dash.  drperry - because the firing order is different in a 4cyl than in a V6, the tachs are made to read differently.  A 4cyl tach won't read right on a V6 tach signal.

It is not because of the firing order, it is because of how many times the coil fires for each revolution.  On a 4 cyl it is 2 times, on a 6 it is 3, on an 8 it is 4, etc.  The tach counts how many times the coil fires and determines the speed from there.  Also Blazerman, I just have never heard a speedo make that kind of noise, not to say it cannot, just that the make up of the speedo is really not prone to noise.  And every speedo cable I have had make noise, makes the speedo itself sound bad.  Plus the cables are cheap, and easy to replace, and if yours is still the oringinal, it should be replaced now anyway.  Korey

heh I knew that somewhere deep re the tach...and I suppose I'll have a go at replacing the cable then.  I should note this is my first vehicle with a cable speedo, all my other cars had electrnoic speedos.

I disagree with Kordog, the Speedo is a mehcanical device and can definately make a noise.  I took my old one out and found the metal loop in the back of it came loose and would rattle around.  Since the back part is sort of magnetic it would occasionaly make contact and make the needle jump about 20 miles off either way.  So I put another speedo in I bought at a junk yard and now I am dealing with a different type of noise.

By the way I drove the car without the speedo for about a week to see if the cable was makign the noise and it was not.  I also wanted to make sure the cable was spinning which it was.

My advice on speedo replacement for these older trucks is to buy a new one, otherwise you are replacing a 20 year old part with another 20 year old part.
