i HATE automatics, dont know why. just do.
this is my first vehicle without a 5 speed...
its a 96 blazer 4x4....
is it possible to do a 5 speed swap from say... an s10?
what would i need from that truck (clutch and brake pedals, tranny, clutch system, 5 speed console? (custom job maybe), ecu)???
also what year would the donor vehicle have to be?
i did do a quick search around the site... but didnt find anything on this... so if i missed a thread on this... dont kill me...
also if this is in the wrong section feel free to move it. i couldnt find a tranny modification section.

I feel EXACTLY the same way! I also have a '96 Blazer 4x4 with auto, and I want to put in a 5-speed really bad.  Has anybody on here done this?

You would also have to get a new steering column, unless you dig the auto shift lever, anywhoo that would be a cool mod but it would take some time and trial and error.

Pretty much any S10 or Blazer from '95 to '97 will work as a donor... Just make sure to get the ECU and such, so the computer isn't like "WTF DID YOU DO TO YOUR TRANSMISSION?!?!?!"

I've owned one automatic in my life... and I loved the car except for that...

I love my 5 speed Blazer! 2005! muwahahahaha!

HAHA, I have a 4 door blazer and I have only seen 2 door blazers with stick and would that transmission still work with a 4dr?

Obviously if you had a 4wd, then you'd want a stick from a 4wd truck.  Only other things I can think of would be the possibility of driveshaft differences if the manual isn't the same overall length as the auto...

Forgot about the driveshaft, lol.

Should theoretically be the same one... I can't find any part numbers on GM Parts Direct, but I'll try and remember to ask the parts people when I go pick up my Blazer from the shop... Or measure things, lol

You know, when I mentioned it to my mechanic a while back (who is also a friend of mine), I vaguely recall him saying something about the wheelbase being different on the 2Ds and 4Ds -- so you may be hitting on something.  But whatever stopped us from cuttin' and fabbin'?

I think I'll ask him about it in more depth.  You see, when I asked him about swapping the tranny, he flat-out refused -- even when I offered to pay him generously to do it.  That means I would have to either pay somebody else that I don't trust, or do it myself.

Hey, if there is ANYBODY out there that has swapped an automatic for a 5-speed on a FOUR-door Blazer, puh-leeze drop by and tell us how you did it!

If I end up being the pioneer that does it first, I will definitely do the same.  I'll tell you guys everything I (or my mechanic) ran up against.

Not only is the driveshaft longer on a 4 door, but it's a different length for 2wd and 4wd...

Biggest thing I would worry about is the length of the front driveshaft.  If the front driveshaft is the same on the 2dr between auto & manual, then you will be able to use your driveshafts and just swap it in.  I'd scour your local junkyards and see what you can turn up.  Just go with a tape measure in hand and see what you can find.

Hey - thanks for the advice!  I will definitely go visit my normal junkyard haunts soon.

Another thing...some stuff I've been reading has been indicating that I could also use a transmission from a Tahoe (K-Blazer) or Silverado, if it has the small block V8. Supposedly it's a heavier-duty transmission. Is this true?

I'm not sure if there's a difference in the NV1500s and NV3500s between the S-series and 1/2 tons... I know the auto tranny is a little beefier..

Ha!  I found some information on both transmissions at http://www.motivegear.com/tech_info/tranny_guide/tranny_guide.html:

New Venture 1500
5 speed fully synchronized transmission, with bell housing integral to aluminum transmission case. Similar in design and appearance to HM290, 5LM60, and NV 3500 series transmissions, but slightly smaller. Requires some special tools to rebuild. Used in 1996 and up GM S10 vehicles with 4 cylinder or 2.8 liter engines.

NV3500
5 speed fully synchronized transmission with the bell housing integral to the aluminum case. There are four design levels of this unit. It started life in 1988 as an HM290 found in GM trucks, and was re-designated 5LM60 with early and late designs. Hm290 and 5LM60 units each have 4 shift rails. The unit was completely redesigned as a 3500 with a single shift rail. Due to all the design variations it is critical to positively identify which model trans you are working on in order to get the right parts. This unit is built in both 2 and 4WD versions. This series of transmissions requires some special tools for rebuilding. These transmissions are found in full size GM trucks from 1988 and up, S10 trucks from 1990 and up, and 1994 and up Dodge Dakota V8 Ram trucks.

I didn't know that GM and Dodge used the same transmissions for a while.  I wonder if this means you could put a Hemi or a Magnum in an S-truck.  LOL

And just looking at the pix, it looks like they may bolt in the same places.  I'd probably need to talk to a techie in person about it (unless someone in here knows the answer). And the author didn't seem to know that the 1500s are also used in the 4.3 Vortecs.
