You know how when you have a new PM, it prompts you to go to your inbox?  Is there something similar that can pop up for first time users?  Or maybe once they register they are prompted to use the search function before posting?  I know my first post was about possible bad ball joints and if I did a search for "popping noise" I most likely would have found my answer.

I'm only suggesting this because it seems that some of the more seasoned forum members get tired of answering the same question over and over (like with my ball joints and various other new members).

What thinkest thou?

Even with the addition of 'Related Threads', there are a lot of questions being repeated and Moderators have taken the time to say the same thing I'm saying.  I just figured a 'Search' prompt would be less offensive than someone saying "Use the search function".

EDIT: Sorry about the double post, figured 9 months was sufficient time to post again about it.

Wow, this is an oldie that must have just gotten missed.

Anyway, there is nothing like that available in the software.  The intent of the 'Useful Threads' link at the top of each forum section is to compile a list of threads that answer the most common questions or atleast give direction to answering those questions and present them in a manner which members can quickly scan through and find what they are looking for.  With a bit more participation, that will become a reality...

And there will always be a certain number of people who want somebody else to do their research for them.

That is very true.  The Useful Threads link will help everyone to get the best information with minimal effort.  Atleast that is my hopes...

You can set it up so when someone registers they recieve a PM from the admin...then in that PM you can talk about using the search function

I have help run many forums and thats the simpliest way to do it, without editing the php

The pm from a admin is a really good idea for someone new that doesn't know how our forum operates and also for someone that isn't as computer literate as most!!!
