paulf707 -> Electric Mirror Modification (5/18/2007 11:06:42 AM)
Hi there
I've got a 1999 UK Chevy Blazer
Has anyone tried to modify the electric mirrors so that they open and close automatically with the ignition (instead of using the switch on the door) ??
It should be easy enought to wire up a relay to close contacts when the ignition is on - can I just wire this in parallel (or instead of) the door switch??
Anybody tried this? or know of any problems this could cause?
Cheers

Please explain what you mean by open and close...

The swicth on the door panel folds the mirrors in (so avoid them getting scratched / hit when parked etc)

Ah.. See, we don't have such features here in the states... LOL
Shouldn't be all that difficult to do. You would probably have to use a timed relay to move them out and in.

If you have an alarm, i can tell you how to wire them up so that on lock or unlock, they fold open and shut.

Thanks hillbillyinohio
I've got the standard (I think) imobiliser and remote key fob. Could that be wired up to open / close the mirrors??

We don't have that option here in Canada either. I would love a feature like that. People are opening their door all the time and whacking my mirror of walking by and hit it. Even when I'm IN THE TRUCK and they go on like they never touched it!!

not really possible witha factory alarm system. Not enough to actually trigger the mirrors.

OK I've been thinking about this.
The rocker switch on the door panel is a changeover swith (i.e. not a momentary click switch) - that means (I think) that I should be able to replace that with a relay that clicks to one state when the ignition is on, and clicks back to the other when the ignition is off.
Is it as simple as that? or am I missing something??

I missed this post. I''''m surprised that this option is not available in the US or Canada!
My Blazer (Japanese import) also has this feature as do a lot of other Japanese imports. It''''s very usefull & as can be seen on the pictures I had been in a tight parking squeeze where I forgot to retract the mirror & scraped the wall. I like the idea of retracting the mirrors when shutting off the ignition or maybe even activating with the central locking. Must look into this.

my envoy has that, i never really use it though but when i need it its nice, it would be cool if they closed and opened automatically though

I can draw out a diagram but need to know exactly how the mirrors work.
From my understanding there is a switch on the dash and when you turn it on you apply 12V to the mirror and it closes? Or does it open when the switch is appling voltage?
I also wish we had this option in the states. Wonder if I could find a set of first gen mirrors and ship them over cause if nithing else it would be cool.

The switch is on the top front of door panel above window & door switches. See pictures in my post.

Yeah but your steering wheel is on the wrong side, lol. Really though the location of switch doesn''t matter my question was more how it functions, normally on or normally off?
