I get a subtle ticking noise from under the hood. It sounds like the serpentine belt. Would it do any harm to spray some STP belt dressing on it? I can't visually see what the problem is.

Read the label on the belt dressing... it says not to use on serpentine belts...

I have a slight ticking too, but its nothing to worry about... just lifters.

If your lifters are ticking, it IS something to worry about....that indicates a problem, it's not normal by any streach for the lifters to tick in these engines.
Belt dressing should not be used on a serpentine belt like Brent said, and your ticking noise could even be caused by belt dressing if someone put some on it.  Try thoroughly cleaning both sides of the belt, I use a wire brush with the engine running, but I wouldn't recommend that method to anyone else.

sometimes the ticking is the belt tentioner

Remove belt start truck

if ticking is still there then its the valve train or worse
if no ticks then look at the belt tentioner it could be going

These things are hard to say without viewing the issue. Its best that once the trouble shooting you can do it done then take it to a Mechanic and have them do a safety check to make sure that you dont have something major going on.

Good luck and Safe travels

Crap, I need to get that checked then...  Been doing it for months, I was told its nothing to worry about.

Thanks for the heads up. Jiffy Lube installed a new belt for me about 6 months ago. Maybe they hosed something

I have a slight ticking too.  It's only right when the engine is started.  It's so mild that I can't get anyone to hear it but me.  I want to know what it is!!  It can't be the belt as I just replaced the belt even though it had like 20,000 on it....just cause I felt like it.  I want to figure out this noise!!!!  Mechanics can't ever even hear it!

I have the same situation.  A slight ticking noise only when it is warming up.  If I wasn't so particular, I probably wouldn't notice it either, but it's there.  After a couple minutes, it disappears, and if you start it again while the motor is warm, it isn't there.

Yep, indeed.  Sure would be swell if any mechanics were particular enough to hear it and tell us what it is...

On a side note I'll be hitting the 100,000 mile mark today so it's a special day for my Blazer, I'll be taking pictures of the odometer when it happens :)
And  since I'm never selling it, it will probably hit a million before I die...I'm so curious what the odometer would do?  I doubt the computer was exactly programmed to go a million miles, it might just stick at 999,999.

Hey both of you guys, I have a question about your noise.  Do you hear it inside the car?  I mean is it really quiet and sounds like it is coming from in front of the driver?  If so I have a cost-free easy fix!

It is fairly quiet. I can barely hear it from inside w/ the radio off, but keep in mind my exhaust is kinda loud. It's easy to hear if I stand by the hood. As far as by the drivers area, I haven't listened that closely I can check again.

One morning, I started my blazer, the lifters were ticking like crazy upon startup, till it warmed up.
I thought to myself, well i'll just adjust them, like Idid on my 92 S-10, which had a 4.3 also.
After some investgative work, seems the lifters are non-adjustable, it's just torque em down to 30 ft. lbs, thats it.
This indicates a lifter or two is seeping down after sitting awhile.
It did this for 2 days, then I went down to Advance Auto, picked up some Mobil One Fully Synthetic 5-30w.
Did the change, with a new filter,it hasn't ticked since, plus it's been holding the best pressure it ever has.
It's been a couple months now, sill quiet.
It's worth a shot to try, instead on engine work.
I hope the best for all that has the ticking going on.

I can hear my ticking noise inside the vehicle (though most people can't hear it no matter how hard you try and make them).  But it only ticks for about 15-20 seconds after the engine is started, and as Justin stated, it only does it if the engine is starting cold.

For the record I've used Mobil 1 fully synthetic 10w-30 oil and filter (rated for 15,000 mi., changed regularly at 4-5,000 mi.) since about 80,000 miles and now I'm at 100,000.

Ok guys I HOPE this is your problem, I'm pretty confident that it is BrianMichaels problem, cause this is a cold-engine only concern that I found on several 2000-2002 Blazers back when they were new.  The next time you start your blazer cold pop your hood and have someone handy to assist.  Sart your truck and make sure you hear the noise, if it's there have them move you accelerator cable off of the PCV tube and see if the noise quits.  The noise I'm talking about is actually the PCV rattling which is normal, but it transmits to the passenger compartment because the accel. cable is touching it.  If that's your noise, just get a zip-tie and secure the cable away from the PCV tube.  Let me know if this helps.

Guess I'm lost, wouldn't the accelerator cable be touching the whole time, hot or cold ?
