Good Mod, but the front tow hooks look pretty much the same as the ones that came on my blazer stock, so I dont know if the front tow hooks are weak or not on the blazer but they have worked for me pulling out bigger trucks and being pulled out by bigger trucks. As for the rear unless you have a trailer hitch you really don't have anywhere that is safe to pull from, so this would be a good mod for none trailer hitch folks, or if you dont want to use the trailer hitch. All you need is a hitch pin or a clevice mounted on a hitch reciever for a good towpoint on the rear. Thanks for the info and pics.

the stock hooks are pretty strong they can hold there own ive only seen one hook brake and it was my brothers 01 jimmy he was pulling out a old bronco that had a 6in lift and some super swampers laying on his frame in a mud hole. he ended up bending the hook damn near straight but got the guy out with the second hook and ended up loseing reverse. about a week later he bent the hook straight and ended up snaping it pulling out a little 2wheel drive wrangler. basically the hooks are strong enough for the our trucks they break cause your pullin somthing a little to heavy or you dont no how to pull. blazers/jimmys dont have a very strong reverse so if your planning on pulling people out get a rear hitch there alot stronger then a hook. but hey still a good cheap mod if you dont have to much cash

I've seen countless stock towhooks break. In my opinoin, they're not strong at all and i wouldn't pull much with them for fear of hurting somebody. That's why i have receiver tubes/shackles and a winch on the front of my truck.

Yeah I was thinking something like that or the same thing but with a shackle instead of a hook. I haven't bent mine or seen any break but I know it is always possible, which is why I did research and know the safer ways of pulling people out. quote:

I have easily over $500 and 40 hours worth of work into it (I was also doing it a certain way so I could produce them later on down the line, which definitely added to the time and cost). For the tubes, the install is very easy. They run $125 for the tubes and all hardware, and approx $70 for both shackles (you really only need one, but it's handy to have both).

You've got the same hitch I do Aaron... NEway, Towhooks are useless to me, but I have to put some on the Jeep at some point so I'll probably get some Chevy 1500 or 2500 hooks from LKQ and bolt the to the frame like sky did.

ive got a broken one still on mine and the other is bent so im looking to replace them with some solid home made jobbies maybe even take a tow hitch and mod it to fit in the front so it puts an even strain on the frame from both sides and doesnt bend anything then get a tow hook from a 3500 or f350 or maybe semi tow truck and slap that on there but strength is something you can never have enough of

I'd love those 2" tubes for my Blazer... but currently my only option is a front mount reciever.... Though, Jiggs winch is in exactly the same place I want mine to go... But I've got no idea how to make it mount up in there, lol

I think I am going to do this conversion of towhooks on the front cause I dont think I am going to get a brushguard afterall, but still want to mount the fog lights I have and still have tow hooks. I actually completely forgot about this thread till I saw drperry post on it. I was waiting for my dad to get home so I could take his tow hook off of the suburban and see if it will work good. The lights I have are to wide to fit in the spot between the towhooks and the plastic, which is where I want to mount them. So I will definately be looking into this and will post up pics if I do the conversion.

I bent a tow hook pulling a Heep out of the mud. He was on 33" with 4" of lift and buried to the frame. I go thim out, howver my hook straightened out some. I prefer shackles to tow hooks. The strap can slip off a tow hook. What ever you use hook it to the frame. I don't recommend using hte step bumper for seriously stuck vehicles. It is only rated to 3,500 pounds. I use it to pull poeple out of the ditch in the winter, but not for vehicles stuck in the mud. Reverse clutch pack doesn't have as many clutches are any of the forward gears. So yes, it is weeker. Plus it doesn't have as low gearing as 1st gear. Always try to pull people out in forward gears when possible. Your tranny will live longer. Thumbnail Image

I should replace my front tow hooks with something more durable, since my reverse is lower than my 1st gear... Yay for 5 speed! lol. That's why I want a front mount reciever or something like Jiggs reciever tubes for the frame rails... So the connection is a little beefier, and so I can leave the strap attatched while playing in the mud in case I get burried and the hooks are too deep, lol.

I believe 5 pseed manuals have an even lower first gear then the 4 speed autos. The manual first gear is like 3.4 while the auto is 3.06 and reverse is like 2.29 or something like that.

Which is part of what has me confused about the 5 speed being able to tow 1000lbs less than the automatic, lol
